Aley Niobium Project
Taseko's wholly-owned Aley Niobium Project is located in northern British Columbia, 140 km north of Mackenzie. Niobium is a soft, grey, ductile transition metal, and is primarily used in the manufacturing of high strength, light-weight, and corrosion resistant steel. Niobium-based steel is found in turbines, aerospace and automobile machinery, and oil and gas pipelines, among other end-products.
About This Project
Taseko recently announced that the resource at Aley had been upgraded to a Measured and Indicated Resource, providing the company with confidence that the deposit will support a long life, low cost mine.
At a 0.2% Nb2O5 cutoff, the Measured and Indicated Resource is 286 million tonnes (average grade of 0.37% Nb2O5) plus 144 million tonnes of Inferred Resource (average grade of 0.32% Nb2O5). The combined Measure and Indicated Resource contains 739 million kilograms of niobium, with an additional 323 million kilograms in the Inferred Resource. The contained kilograms make Aley the largest undeveloped niobium project in the world.
Recently, Taseko reached an agreement with the Tsay Keh Dene to support the exploration program and environmental studies at the property. The metallurgical work continues, along with hydrological and geotechnical drilling and baseline environmental studies, all of which will inform the preliminary economic study to be finalized in the near future. The agreement includes provisions for employment and training opportunities for Tsay Keh Dene members, contracting and business opportunities for Tsay Keh Dene businesses, participation and capacity funding, environmental management and monitoring programs, and a framework and commitment to develop a Comprehensive Cooperation and Benefit Agreement for the eventual development and operation of a mine.
