Brule (Dillon) Mine

Located between Chetwynd (~1 hour) and Tumbler Ridge (~1.5 hours) Brule Mine became Conuma Coal's first operational mine on the 21st September 2016 .The open-pit metallurgical coal mine produces a premium low volatile PCI. Brule’s quality characteristics rank it among the very best PCI in the world, and is sought by steelmakers for its high coke replacement ratio, low sulfur and low phosphorous.

About This Project

The Brule mine is located within northeast BC's coal belt, approximately 57 km south of the town of Chetwynd. Brule produces metallurgical coal and first opened in December 2004 after receiving a Mines Act permit on September 4, 2004 and Environmental Management Act (EMA) authorizations. The mine received an environmental assessment (EA) certificate on July 4, 2006, and this certificate has since been amended four times.

Brule operated from December 2004 to July 2014, when it went into care and maintenance due to low coal prices. In 2016, Conuma Coal Resources Ltd. bought the Brule mine, along with the nearby Wolverine and Willow Creek coal mines, from Walter Energy Ltd. Brule was re-opened under this new owner in September 2016, putting 285 coal miners back to work.
