Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines

Enbridge takes pride in its long-standing reputation as a safe pipeline operator and socially responsible company. With decades of experience in pipeline construction and environmental protection, Enbridge has committed to constructing and operating the proposed Northern Gateway to the highest environmental and safety standards to ensure environmental protection.

About This Project

The proposed Northern Gateway project consists of two 1,177 km pipelines running from just outside of Edmonton, AB to a deepwater terminal and tank farm in Kitimat, BC. The oil pipeline will carry 525,000 barrels of oil per day from Edmonton to Kitimat and the second pipeline will carry 193,000 barrels of condensate per day from Kitimat to Edmonton.

In Kitimat, a marine terminal will be built with two mooring berths and 19 storage tanks for oil and condensate. This terminal will be built with world-class safety and environmental standards, including a radar monitoring station and first response capabilities.

Northern Gateway will employ 3,000 workers at peak construction and will create 62,700 person-years of employment. The marine terminal is expected to create 165 long-term jobs to operate the terminal, tug fleet, first response and to monitor the surrounding environment. The project will generate approximately $2.6 billion in tax revenue through the life of the project.

Enbridge submitted a regulatory application for the project in 2010. The Joint Review Panel of the National Energy Board and Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency released its report on December 19, 2013, recommending approval of the project subject to 209 conditions. The Government of Canada gave approval, subject to the 209 conditions and additional Aboriginal engagement, on June 17, 2014.

The Northern Gateway Regional Skills and Business Database is designed to connect local residents from communities near the Northern Gateway project to employment and business opportunities associated with the project and/or with Northern Gateway’s contractors and service providers. Learn More
