Quality Wind Project

Tumbler Ridge is home to Capital Power's new Quality Wind Project that will produce 142.2 megawatts of power per year from 79, 1.8 MW wind turbines. The project includes a 22 km, 230 kV transmission line, collector lines, substation and an operations & maintenance building in Tumbler Ridge.

About This Project

Wind energy is a clean, renewable source of power, and the Peace Region has strong, reliable winds.

In March 2010, Capital Power’s Quality Wind Project (QWP) was selected by BC Hydro to supply British Columbia with renewable energy under an Electricity Purchase Agreement (EPA). Capital Power completed an extensive and rigorous environmental assessment for the project, that was approved by the BC government in 2010.

The 142-megawatt (MW) 79-turbine QWP is located near Tumbler Ridge, BC and near available transmission lines. Capital Power is building and will own and operate the facility, with commercial operation anticipated in late 2012.

Capital Power has received extensive community support for the project that will generate enough electricity to meet the average annual power needs of 43,000 BC homes (based on the average household energy use of 1000 kWh/month).

Capital Power is a growth-oriented North American power producer headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta that owns more than 3,300 megawatts of power generation capacity at 16 facilities across North America. An additional 487 megawatts of owned wind generation capacity is under construction or in advanced development in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.
