Quintette Coal Mine

The Quintette project is located about 20 km south of Tumbler Ridge, BC. In June 2010, Teck Recources initiated a feasibility study to reopen the Quintette Mine, which had operated for 18 years prior to 2000. The driving force behind the mine's reopening is an increased demand for steelmaking coal in China and other parts of Asia.

About This Project

Following approval from its board of directors, Teck Resources plans to begin construction immediately in hopes of the mine starting full operations in 2013.
Teck has already begun discussions with area First Nations and maintains that acknowledging and respecting treaty rights, community needs, and traditional knowledge are an integral part of their process.

Due to Teck's plan to use the existing permitted infrastructure, the company's permitting path will likely be minimal. By maximizing the use of the existing mine infrastructure and rejuvenating the process plant, Teck anticipates a 15 to 17 year mine life with a design capacity of three to three-and-a-half million metric tonnes of clean coal per annum.

Long-lead equipment items, including trucks, shovels and drills have been ordered; preliminary on-site work has commenced; and stakeholder consultation and permitting processes are ongoing. In addition, Teck plans to relocate a portion of the conveyor belt to avoid the use of coal trucks travelling up and down the mountain, which should reduce wildlife mortality, decrease environmental hazards, and reduce the mine footprint.

Teck anticipates that reopening the mine could create approximately 350 to 400 direct jobs throughout the mine's life for residents to the area. The company's ultimate objective is to develop a mine that will be valued by the communities and adheres to its corporate principles.
