Willow Creek Coal Expansion
Walter Energy's wholly-owned Willow Creek open pit mine is already operational, and is looking to increase annual production by 240% to 1.7 million tonnes of coal per year.
About This Project
Currently Willow Creek’s on-site processing plant and rail loadout facility have a capacity of 0.9 million tonnes per year. As part of the expansion the site will have its throughput capacity to the processing plant and rail load-out facility increased by 311% to handle over 3.7 million tonnes of coal per year. The newly expanded facilities will process coal from both the Willow Creek mine and the nearby Brule mine, eliminating the need to construct a plant and load-out facility for Brule.
The site currently employs 200 people, and once it is at full capacity, the Willow Creek Mine will be employ over 300 people at the mine and plant facilities.
The expansion of the mine follows a prefeasability study that determined the site contains 37.3 million tonnes of Measured Coal Resources and 11.9 million tonnes of Indicated and Inferred Coal Resources, totaling 49.2 million tonnes of Measured plus Indicated Resources. This is an increase of 40% in Measured plus Indicated Resources.
Walter Energy is a publicly traded "pure-play" metallurgical coal producer with access to Asian, North and South American and European steel markets. Walter Energy also produces thermal coal, anthracite, metallurgical coke and coal bed methane gas. The company employs approximately 4,400 employees and contractors with operations in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
